Our Service

To accurately and confidently quantify drug concentrations in urine, our Clinical Toxicology Divisio utilizes liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This method relies on the idea that different compounds will separate based on size if forced to go along a long liquid tube- much like rocks in a fast moving stream. At the end of this tube the compounds are zapped to give them electrical charge. Inside the machine are detectors that can tell how far compounds travel after being zapped and exposed to a magnetic field (The distance depends on the size and how charged the compounds are.). Tandem mass spectrometry does this twice to separate out things even better. Different compounds will travel characteristic distances and give a signature that an experienced operator can recognize.
