Our Service

UF Health Pathology Laboratories' Cytopathology Division is divided into two main focuses:

  1. Gynecologic Cytology: This service includes Pap tests — conventional or liquid-based, which may also have molecular testing for the human papilloma virus by the FDA-approved Hybrid Capture 2 test, as well as chlamydia and gonorrhea testing.
  2. Medical Cytology: This service includes the examination of body fluids, such as pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and cerebrospinal fluids, in addition to respiratory and urinary specimens. Samples are received on slides, which are stained and evaluated by a team of cytopathologists, or cyto-spins are made.
    • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsies: This service is active in the performance of superficial FNAs for clinic and hospital patients and in the interpretation of these cases, in addition to those performed with image guidance and by other physicians. Our state-of-the-art core laboratory prepares conventional smears, cyto-spins and cell blocks for immunohistochemical, flow cytometry and molecular diagnostic evaluation.
