Muscle and Nerve Pathology

The major goal of UF Health Pathology Laboratories' Muscle and Nerve Pathology Division is to make superior clinical services available to patients with neuromuscular diseases and proactively support neurologists, rheumatologists, and related health care providers in the management of their patients.

We are committed to actively contributing to the advancement of the field of muscle and nerve pathology and to the education of tomorrow's pathologists, neurologists and rheumatologists, as well as other associated clinicians. We practice a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of muscle disorders. In addition to our evaluation of conventional histology and electron microscopy, we routinely utilize a quantitative panel of specialized immunohistochemical, cytogenetic and molecular techniques.

The Division's pathology activities include:
  • Making comprehensive academic instruction available for students of the University of Florida's Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry;
  • Participating in the education of UF neurology and pathology residents, as well as continuing medical education for physicians; and
  • Making pathology services available to UF Health Shands Hospital and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, as well as physicians and patients throughout the state of Florida.
