Specimen Requirements:

Skin tissue must be fixed in 10% formalin. If immunobullous disease is suspected, submit half of the tissue in Michel’s fixative for a direct immunofluorescence study.

For podiatry kits (#101), fixative and more information, contact the UF Health Pathology Laboratories Client Services Department at 888.375.LABS (5227). Culture collection medium is provided in the podiatry kits.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Submit specimens according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions:
  • Frozen specimens
  • Specimens not in appropriate fixative
Stability (collection to initiation of testing):
  • Ambient: Indefinitely
  • Refrigerated: Indefinitely
