Pulmonary Pathology

The main objective of UF Health Pathology Laboratories' Pulmonary Pathology Laboratory is to make comprehensive lung pathology services available to patients at UF Health Shands Hospital, using state-of-the-art technology to ensure the highest-quality care.

We routinely process biopsies and surgical specimens to diagnose transplant rejection, infectious lung disease, lung tumors, interstitial lung disease and other chronic non-neoplastic lung disorders. In addition to our evaluation of conventional histology, we routinely utilize a quantitative panel of specialized immunohistochemical, cytogenetic and molecular techniques.

We work closely with colleagues in adult and pediatric pulmonary and critical care services, the thoracic surgery and lung transplant units, as well as hematology, oncology and diagnostic radiology, thereby providing highest standard of care possible in a timely and efficient manner.

Likewise, UF Health Pathology Laboratories provides regional consultation services in pulmonary pathology. Our pulmonary pathology activities include:

  • Comprehensive academic instruction for the University of Florida Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry;
  • Participating in the education of UF internal medicine and pathology residents; and
  • Fostering interdisciplinary research programs in lung cancer and lung transplant-related research.
