Specimen Requirements:

Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Lavender-top tube (EDTA) or plasma-preparation tube (PPT)
  • Centrifuge the specemin within 24 hours of collection. Transfer the plasma to a screw-cap polypropylene transport tube. Ship specimens to the lab frozen (preferred). To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, submit a separate frozen specimen for each test requested.

Sample Volume: 3.5 mL

Minimum Volume: 1.1 mL

Storage: Freeze (preferred) or refrigerate specimens immediately after collection.
Stability (collection to time of analysis/testing):

  • Ambient: 24 hours
  • Refrigerated: 6 days
  • Frozen: 6 weeks
Rejection Criteria:

  • Incorrect anticoagulant
  • PPT frozen and/or not centrifuged

Use:

This test is used to detect and quantitate HIV-1 in plasma.

Limitations

  • Assay Range: 20 − 10,000,000 copies/mL
