Immunofixation, Serum

Additional Information:

UFHPL Epic order code: LAB4493

Immunofixation electrophoresis of serum or urine is most often ordered to evaluate a monoclonal globulin detected in a protein electrophoresis or to delineate a possible lymphoproliferative process, particularly myeloma. This procedure will characterize the specific light and heavy chain components of a monoclonal protein.

82784(x3), 86334

Specimen Requirements:

Type: Serum (Sperate serum from red cells.)

Container/Tube: Red-top tube or gel-barrier tube

Sample Volume: 2 mL

Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Storage: Store specimens at refrigerated temperature.

Stability (collection to time of analysis/testing):

  • Ambient: 3 days
  • Refrigerated: 7 days
  • Frozen: 2 months

Use:

This test detects and identifies monoclonal immunoglobulin gammopathies.

Methodology:

Electrophoresis followed by immunodiffusion against monospecific antisera to immunoglobulin and individual heavy and light chain (IFE).
