Nail Testing for Fungus (Onychomycosis)

Specimen Requirements:

Place nail fragments in an empty sterile container 10% formalin.

For containers and fixative, contact UF Health Pathology Laboratories’ Client Services Department at 888.375.LABS (5227).

Storage/Transport Temperature: Submit specimens according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions:
  • Frozen specimens
  • Refrigerated
  • Specimens in formalin substitute (alcohol-based)
Stability (collection to initiation of testing):
  • Ambient: 1 week

This test is used to detect and diagnose infections of the nail using a PAS stain.
