Testing, Samples, and Orders

The UF Health Pathology Laboratories Nontuberculosis Mycobacteria Laboratory accepts both clinical specimen samples obtained from the patient including sputum, bronchioalveolar lavage fluid, tissue, wound swabs or aspirates, urine, eye swabs and fluids and others.  Additionally, the lab accepts positive cultures, liquid and/or solid media, grown at other laboratories. Swabs are not recommended for recovery of acid-fast bacilli. Samples from patients with confirmed or suspected tuberculosis should be sent directly to the State Bureau of Public Health Laboratories, or an appropriate testing facility in the state where the patient resides.
