Specimen Requirements:
To obtain an intraepidermal nerve density kit (#0100) and detailed collection instructions, contact UF Health Pathology Laboratories’ Client Services Department at 888.375.LABS (5227).
Two 3 mm skin-punch biopsies from leg and thigh.
Storage/Transport Temperature: Ship biopsies using a nerve fiber fixative collection kit at 2 - 8° C. Use Zamboni’s Formula and cryoprotectant for transportation of specimens. Use phosphate buffer to rinse specimens before storage in cryoprotectant.
Unacceptable Conditions:
- Specimens in inappropriate fixative
- Ambient
- Frozen specimens
Stability (collection to initiation of testing):
- Refrigerated: 2 weeks
Use:
This test is used to determine the amount of neuropathy damage present and as a predicative test of impending neuropathy
