Plasma is not recommended since fibrinogen in the sample will add to the protein measured. If plasma must be used, the recommended anticoagulant is heparin.

Specimen Requirements:

Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Serum gel

Sample Volume: Submit full tubes.

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum


  1. Send specimens in their original tubes.
  2. Centrifuge tubes if there is a delay in transport of more than 1 hour.

  • Sample is stable for 7 days at 15 – 25°C
  • Sample is stable 30 days at 2 – 8ºC

Unacceptable Conditions: Samples with moderate or marked hemolysis will be rejected.

Specimen Retention Time: 5 days
