Collection Procedure:
Three (3) respiratory specimens should be collected at 8- to 24-hour intervals (24-hour interval is preferred) and should include at least 1 first-morning specimen.
Neutralize Gastric washing specimens within 4 hours of collection with 100 mg of sodium bicarbonate per 5 to 10 mL of specimen.

Specimens should be transported as quickly as possible to the laboratory, preferably within one hour. Specimens delayed longer than 30 minutes before transport should be refrigerated.

Detection and identification of Mycobacterium species.
Methodology:
Continuous monitoring broth culture system and conventional culture.
Includes microscopic exam with fluorochrome stain.
Reported:
42 days (Positive cultures reported when detected)
Reference Values:
No growth.
Identification (plus susceptibility if indicated) performed on positive cultures.
Interpretation Data:
A final negative report is issued after 42 days of incubation.
Positive cultures are reported when detected.
