Thyroglobulin Autoantibodies (TGA)
EPIC Test Name: THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY
Collect specimen in SST tube. Allow to clot. Centrifuge and store refrigerated . Transport to lab.
Specimen Type: Serum
Sample Volume: 1 mL
Minimum Volume: 0.1 mL (Repeat testing is not possible with this specimen volume.)
Stability (collection to time of analysis/testing):
- Refrigerated: 7 days
- Frozen: Indefinitely
- Diagnosis of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: The detection of either thyroperoxidase autoantibodies (TPOA) or thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TGA) in the presence of biochemically defined hypothyroidism or euthyroid goiter identifies an autoimmune etiology as the cause of the subject’s thyroid disease.
- Prediction of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: The detection of TPOA and/or TGA in an asymptomatic individual indicates an increased risk for the subsequent development of auto immune thyroid disease that can produce goiter and/or either hypothyroidism (Hashimoto thyroid or atropic thyroiditis) or hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease).
