Zinc Transporter 8 Autoantibody (ZnT8A)
EPIC Test Name: ZINC TRANSPORTER 8 AB
Sample Volume: 1 mL
Minimum Volume: 0.1 mL (Repeat testing is not possible with this specimen volume.)
Storage: Centrifuge, separate and transfer the serum to a plastic vial. Ship specimens with a frozen cold pack for overnight delivery.
Stability (collection to time of analysis/testing):
- Refrigerated: 24 hours
- Frozen: 1 year
- Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes: Zinc transporter 8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A) in patients with diabetes mellitus indicate that the etiology of the diabetes is autoimmune (i.e., type 1 diabetes). ZnT8A are also valuable in the diagnosis of latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA).
- Prediction of Type 1 Diabetes: ZnT8A in an asymptomatic individual places the subject at increased risk for developing type 1 diabetes.
- Relationship of ZnT8A to Beta-Cell Function, Following Pancreas Transplantation: The presence of ZnT8A in the serum of patients who have undergone a pancreas transplant predicts beta-cell failure.
